Beginner map and compass skills. Two – three hours of classroom work and two to three hours of field work to get hands-on experience using your compass and a map. A must for anyone venturing out into non serviced areas of the backcountry.

June 25th Canfor Grande Prairie, 9am -3pm

Our Level 1 Map and Compass course is a full day, split into classroom work and field work. Bring a packed lunch, a water bottle and dress appropriately for the weather, and for walking through wet or muddy terrain. You must bring a compass with a mirror, declination adjustment and metric ruler. 

Goals and Objectives: 

9:00am Classroom Work

Learning the Components of a compass

Map Scales

Grid System and Grid References

Map Symbols

Contour Lines and basic interpretation

Use of the compass to take bearings from a map

Walking on general compass bearings

Identifying large features on a map and then finding them in the surrounding area

Macro or large area navigation techniques

How to re-orientate yourself if you do get lost

Basic route finding 

12:00pm Lunch (30 minutes)

12:30pm head to the field
